Detailed Itinerary
Morning: Transfer from Entebbe to Mabamba
Your adventure begins early in the morning with a pick-up from your hotel in Entebbe. You will take a speedboat or road transfer across the beautiful waters of Lake Victoria to reach Mabamba Bay Swamp. The boat option offers stunning views and a chance to see fishermen starting their day, while the road route passes through local villages and landscapes.
Shoebill Watching Canoe Ride
Upon arrival at Mabamba, you will meet your local birding guide and board a traditional canoe to explore the extensive wetland channels. The canoe glides silently through the papyrus swamps, creating the perfect opportunity to spot the Shoebill Stork as it patiently waits to hunt lungfish, catfish, and frogs.
The Shoebill is one of the world’s most sought-after bird species, and Mabamba is considered one of the most reliable places in Africa to see it. With a bit of luck, you may see the Shoebill at a close range – a sight birdwatchers and nature lovers never forget.
Other Bird Species
Besides the Shoebill, Mabamba is home to over 260 bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Expect to see:
African Jacana
Malachite Kingfisher
Pied and Giant Kingfishers
Squacco Heron
African Fish Eagle
Purple Swamphen
Papyrus Gonolek
White-faced Whistling Duck
Migratory birds such as Blue Swallow and Northern Pintail can also be spotted at certain times of the year.
Midday: Relaxation and Local Encounters
After birding, you can enjoy some time interacting with local fishermen and communities around the swamp. Their knowledge of the wetland adds cultural value to your visit. Depending on your arrangements, you may also enjoy a picnic lunch or return to Entebbe for a meal.
Afternoon: Return to Entebbe
You will later board your transfer back to Entebbe. If you took the speedboat option, enjoy another refreshing ride across Lake Victoria. You will arrive back in Entebbe in the afternoon or early evening, marking the end of your 1 Day Mabamba Shoebill Experience.
